This study suggestes the relationship between arcus and high bloosd sugar needs to bestudied further, VSP officials Follow-up testing showed that 88 percent of the patientsx with arcus had high blood sugar, 66 percent had an elevatedx body mass index, 64 percent had high blood pressure and 21 percentt had elevated cholesterol.
The study was conducte d on 2,000 patients between Aprilk andSeptember 2008. In addition to an eye VSP doctors screened patients for othee health risks and referred those at risk to the foundationh for diagnosis andadditional testing. “Thiw study demonstrates ... how comprehensivew eye exams should be used as a screenin for prevalentmetabolic conditions,” Dr. Steven Leichter, medical director at the researcnh foundation, said in a press release. “Greater partnership between relevant health care providers may enhancs the efficiency of our healt caresystem and, in the end, reduced health care costs.
