million grant headed to Franklin County law enforcemenf as part of morethan $44 millionj flowing into the state through stimulus-funded Justice Department U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a release that Franklim County isreceiving $4.59 million under the Edward Byrnw Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. That initiativs is backed by morethan $4 billio that was earmarked in the federal stimulus package President Barack Obamw signed this year. On top of the grant to Franklin County and severalother municipal-level awards totalingt $6.55 million, Ohio is receiviny more than $38 million througg the same program and must disburss part of the funds to locaol jurisdictions.
Holder said the funds are aimerd at supporting job creation and trainintg in a wide rangeof law-enforcement areas. “By addressing Ohio’s economic challenges while simultaneouslyy meetingthe state’s public safety priorities, thesew funds represent the best of what the (Americabn Investment and) Recovery Act can do for our Holder said in a release. “This vitak funding will help fight crime and buildsafe communities, and we look forward to continued work with Ohio to addresxs these criminal-justice goals.” The U.S. attorney’s office said more locakl awards will beannounced later.
Municipalities had until May 18 to submit applications for funding but the deadline has been extended toJune 17. More detailsa on the program areavailable .
